Char siu is one of my mom’s favorite and I grew up eating char siu bao after school, so I wanted to take a shot making it myself. It turned out better than I thought, but over rice didn’t seem like the best way to eat it.
Ingredients
- 1 lb pork butt cut into two pieces
Marinade
- Honey
- Hoisin sauce
- Soy sauce
- Black vinegar
- Chinese 5 spice
- Sesame oil
- 2 garlic cloves minced
Instructions
- Marinate the pork with 2/3 of the marinade overnight.
- Preheat oven to 375. Place pork in pan on rack.
- Roast for 10 minutes, turn pork over, brush with marinade and cook for another 10 minutes or so.
- Brush the pork with the sauce for one last time before broiling on high heat until the pork is slightly charred on the surface, about 2-3 minutes. Repeat the same for the other side. Make sure not to burn the surface, check at the 2-minute.mark.
- Take the pork out, let it cool, and then slice it into bite-sized pieces.
- Add to bowl with rice, green onions, sesame oil, and sesame seeds. Drizzle marinade over.
